Gunther

This was my first real 3D model, coming in at about 1800 triangles (quite a bit in those hands..). Not to say I just popped open 3D Studio and this came out, heavens no! I spent quite a bit of time working on tutorials and getting stuff figured out, and then when I decided I was good and ready, I gave the model a shot... and for the first time, I did something cool in 3D! I had tried to learn before and always gave up at some point every time, so I'm very pleased with having stuck with it and getting something out of it. I really have to thank Dock for helping and inspiring me to get over my 3D fears... Anyway, the character is Gunther, a sort of mascot-mecha I've been drawing since high school, so he was a good candidate to try to bring to 3D. I'm not so intimidated now of course, but bringing out all his shapes (especially the head) was a lot of work and definitly good experience, and I learned an awful lot. I even converted him into a model for UT2003 (he uses the default animations), getting a bit more experience out of the model that way. The portrait on the right is not usually how I'd draw him in 2D (though there is usually a goofy aspect to him), but since the model was 3D after all, I thought it'd be fun to have a model with a 2D portrait image, and went ahead and did it really silly and exaggerated, even more so than usual. You've probably noticed I did the same with my other models.. it just seemed like a cool thing to do. :)
