Welcome to the troubleshooting page. We have tried very hard to "fumigate"
Qoheleth (that is, get rid of the bugs), but you know how bugs are! Please contact
us if you find a bug or have a problem with the game.
We have listed some of the problems and/or limitations players have encountered.
Some are easy to solve, others are more complicated. If you don't find your
problem listed here, please let us know. Thanks!
Every time I get ready to play Qoheleth, the computer asks me if I want to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. What is this?
You are running Windows 95 or 98, and you have the DOS version of Qoheleth. If you say 'yes' when the computer
asks if you want to restart in MS-DOS mode, the game will automatically reboot your computer in MS-DOS mode and begin the game.
When you quit the game, your computer will automatically bring you back into Windows 95/98. This is a common solution to operating
certain types of DOS programs in a Windows 95 environment, and typically has no effect on Windows 95/98. If you do not wish for your computer
to restart in MS-DOS mode to play Qoheleth, you can download the Qoheleth95 upgrade patch
(for Windows 95/98).
I know I have a sound card, but I don't get any sound.
The MS-DOS version of Qoheleth uses sound software only compatible with true
SoundBlaster sound cards and certain SoundBlaster "clones". The upgrade
Qoheleth 95 for Windows 95 should work with the vast majority of sound
cards.
When I try to start the game, I get a message about EMM386.
The memory management program EMM386 can create some problems for Qoheleth. One of the
most common problems is insufficient DMA buffers. Your computer may print a message
such as "add D=64 to your EMM386.EXE command." Please contact us via e-mail if you
receive a message of this nature, and we will guide you through the necessary procedures
to deal with this.
I downloaded the Qoheleth 95/98 upgrade patch and installed it, but when I
try to start the game, I get a message "DDRAW.DLL Not Found."
Qoheleth for Windows 95/98 uses DirectX, a Microsoft package of products. DirectX
is available for free downloading at www.microsoft.com/directx.
Select the option titled something like "End User Downloads" and follow the instructions. DirectX
is about 3 to 5 MB, so it may take about 30 minutes to download. (NOTE: Many users will already
have DirectX installed on their computers, especially if they have any other games designed for Windows 95/98).
The action seems slow and jerky during game play.
It is likely that your computer does not have sufficient processing
power to run Qoheleth smoothly. This applies especially to older
386 systems and "low end" 486 systems (SX). If you are multi-tasking
under Windows 3.1x (i.e., you have more than one program open at the
same time), close the programs and Exit Windows to the DOS
prompt. You can also speed up the action by "turning off" the wild
animals under the Options menu.
It's hard to keep using the manual to look up how to move and
do other things.
You can access basic keystroke help in the game by pressing F1 at any time.
In the full version, the F2 through F6 keys give additional hints and help.
In addition, the CD-ROM version has an on-line manual which can be accessed
from the DOS prompt by typing "edit manual.doc" in the directory where you
installed the game (probably C:\QOHELETH).
I don't like having to deal with the wild animals.
You can turn off the wild animals under the Options menu. You will
receive 25% less points for play without the wild animals, but it
does make it easier to navigate :-) .
